History

September 2004 - Start

Kamer.nl was founded in September 2004 by Bart Kappenburg as a solution to the growing room shortage in the Netherlands. Bart started building the first version of the site (then called kamerhuren.net) from his student room. His study econometrics at the RuG had to be put on hold temporarily to make time for the site.

October 2004- Going Live

The 1st version of the site is live and immediately a success. Hundreds of students know how to find the site and use it to find a new room. Landlords also find their way to the site to fill the supply.

April 2005 - Change from credit system to monthly fee

In the first version we still worked with credits (30 credits for an x amount), but soon it appeared that the users had a greater need for unlimited responses for a fixed amount per month. The number of users increased enormously, as did the offers. We had now firmly established ourselves as a platform in the Dutch market.

May 2005 - Acquisition domain name kamer.nl

In May 2005 we were offered the domain name kamer.nl. We seized this opportunity with both hands and transferred the name kamerhuren.net to kamer.nl.

May 2007 - Version 2

The 1st version was in need of replacement: a new fresh logo and design gave the site a new boost and we were ready to receive even more visitors.

April 2008 - English version

Because more and more international students were coming to study in the Netherlands, we were one of the first sites to make our site available in English.

July 2010 - Acquisition of Kamer.nl by Conduit/InfoNX

In July 2010 Kamer.nl, as part of Centroid Media BV, was taken over by an American party. Bart stayed on as an employee for two more years but said goodbye to the company in July 2012. The end of an era?

July 2015 - Reacquisition of Kamer.nl by Bart

The American company had no love and attention for kamer.nl and Bart saw with regret that the quality of the offerings, the service orientation and the overall quality had been neglected. Bart then made a takeover offer that was accepted by the Americans. Kamer.nl was back in trusted hands! From then on Kamer.nl was part of Inversive Media BV, Bart's company.

November 2017 - version 3

After 2 years of working on a new version, the team delivered a new version of the site. With a completely new look-and-feel (the current one is still live) kamer.nl is ready to go for a long time to come!

September 2004 - Start

In corona time, the team led by Ronald rewrote the entire softwarestack. The site is now faster, better & is more service oriented. With an easier search function, revamped profiles and an improved subscription plan, the site was back up to date.

February 2024 - version 5

The site features a completely new design. Friendly on mobile and desktop.
